World of Warcraft Shard?

I heard my dad talking to his friend about this. What exactly is it? From some ease dropping I heard that you basically get to play WoW for free but get stuff (patches etc) at an EXTREMELY slow rate compared to paying for it. So, where do you get it?
Looking for a link if possible.

Shard is a term from another game that basically equals what WoW calls a realm.

Does your dad play the real version of warcraft too?

Private servers are against Blizzards TOS. If you have an active account with WoW, you agree to this every time you logon after a patch. Your account can be banned for playing on a private server.

Running a private server is actually illegal. Blizzard is one of the only companys to win a court case against the operators of a private server.

You might let your dad know this information. He's not setting a very good example for following rules. It's about the same as him telling you to be in bed by 10pm and you stay up until 11:30pm because you just dont care about the rule.
