World of Warcraft: leather, blacksmith, skinning, mining?

Ok, ive got lvl 250 skinning, lvl 90 leatherworking, and i have a low lvl (6) alt that i use to skin and mine to make a little more cash, I was thinking to change my main over to blacksmithing instead of skinning and keep leatherworking. This alt can really only get light leather at the moment, and i dont wanna spend a lot of time leveling him up to get medium, heavy, etc. Is this a good idea or bad? Any opinions or advice from people who have tried this in the past would be greatly appreciated.

If your goal is to make money, the best way to do so is to take two gathering skills (skinning, mining, or herbalism).

What you're suggesting is making your main a pure crafter (LW and BS) and your alt, which you said you don't want to spend time on, as the supplier for your main. As you pointed out, your crafter will be limited by the gathering abilities of your alt, which you don't want to level. You will stagnate your skills very quickly.

You have a couple options. One is to keep LW and skinning on your main, and go mining and BS on your alt. Each character will be self supplying, although you're likely to find that your crafting skill will quickly out pace your ability to gather.

Second would be to make your main your skinner and miner, and your alt the LW/BS. You'll limit cap on ability to train trade skills, however, and will have to level your alt at some point if you want to advance. If you go this route, send your alt materials sufficient to level out their trade skills, and then sell everything else for profit. When you get bored with playing your main, level the alt up to the next level needed to upgrade trade skills. That'll give you incentive to get back on your main and gather (and level) some more in order to keep your alts trade skills moving forward.

Your third option (and my suggestion) would be to keep skinning on your main, and drop LW for mining. Take skinning and mining (or herbalism) on your alt as well. If you know that eventually you want to be a leatherworker or blacksmith, look for a good power leveling guide on the game forums and stockpile the mats that you'll eventually need. Everything else sells for profit. Then once you hit 70, and gold becomes more readily available (daily quests, quest rewards, etc), then drop one of your gathering skills and pick up the crafting skill that compliments.

My huntress started out skinning/LW and LW stagnated around 275 (very little good mail items) and again around 330, when mats were very prohibitive and I still had few recipes that were really useful to her. I eventually retrained her to mining/skinning, and then mining/herbalism when the market for leather got weak. She funded her epic flyer with no problems, and was able to keep my alts well supplied with gold and items. My priest was mining/enchanting up until 70. The cash income from mining, with some help from my huntress made it so I was able to keep enchanting reasonably well leveled. I dropped mining for tailoring, and through some guild/friend help and again, the cash from my huntress, I was able to power-level tailoring to 375 over the course of a week or so.
