In World of Warcraft, why are there more Alliance Players than Horde players?

I checked a stats website and saw that a census found that there are about 55% Alliance and 45% Horde globally. Any reason why more people pick Alliance over Horde?

The main reason for this is that the census you are speaking about is collected from an addon which happens to be used much more by alliance playes than horde players. What it does is "Who" everyone possible on the server, and it needs to be updated regularly, since horde players don't usualy use it, that messes up the results. My own server for example, has 10 people using the addon on horde, and 540 or so on alliance ( the website mentions this). Another thing is that due to the way the alliance characters look they are more popular amond the younger and newer wow players, however the older players tend to choose the horde side because they are the "cool evil guys" , that is mainly why the undead are such a favored race on the horde side
